I retired eight months ago from the tire and auto service bizz at age 59. Never had the aptitude or desire to be a tech so I spent the last 37 years doing tire, alignment, lube and basic maintenance. I loved the business and had great relationships with owners, managers and techs. I became the “go to” guy for all kinds of stuff. The company wants me to go back to work, full or part time. No plans to do that as retirement is just wonderful!

I hope it wasn’t a tire store, where you were busting tires 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. That would be tough on any one, let alone someone over 50 !

Last set of ties I did was over 30 years ago. Manual changer, in the pits of a local race track. 90 degrees. The wheels had a very large offset so I had to keep flipping the over to break the bead and get the bead off. 4 off, 4 on. I thought I was going to die from dehydration !

I keep thinking I should get a manual changer. Cheap backup insurance. Probably never use it !

The mass discounters took away most of our tire business(thank God)over the last 15 years. Low and ultra-low profile tires of recent times are hard enough work. And don’t get me started about the popularity of ridiculously big and heavy pick-up and suv stuff! The company gradually moved to mostly maintenance and service work which is much more profitable anyway. In the last year I worked there, I only did maybe 30-50 tires per week.

I’ve done that pit crew trip too. That can be pretty hard work! I would only recommend a manual tire changer for implement and motorcycle tires. Just breaking the beads on most modern stuff without a big powerful machine can be a soul-destroying experience!
