While looking for Speaker adapters for potencial Speaker Upgrade in my Aveo… I was looking for a coverter adaptor that would allow me to mount 6x9s in a 6.5″ hole. One link led me to a Nissan forum of someone asking how to do this exact thing on a Maxima. Other users responded by saying this is a pointless thing to do because “Sound is Round” Not Oval and putting in 6x9s would actually make sound quality worse. Do you really get better sound from Round Speakers?

Also the Doors take 4″ speakers. There is a MDF spacer i can buy that will allow me to install 6.5s in the doors. Is it worth doing?

If the speakers are good quality, then they should perform just as well within their operating limits. Most of the arguments against the oval speakers seem to be either based on bogus science or only hold true with a combination of ridiculous power levels and careful measurement.

The 6×9 speakers will have different characteristics than the ones they are replacing, so you may need to tweak the equalizer a bit. Same thing when replacing 4 inch with 6.5 inch. The larger speakers will give you better bass and lower mid-range, but you’ll loose some high end if they aren’t properly designed two way.

Be sure to get the polarity correct because that would really make things sound weird if a speaker or two were 180 degrees out of phase from the others 😛 🙂

I agree with the above. If your a real sound buff and looking for the best of the best crisp sounds quality then going and seeing a professional car audio installer may shed some better light on things and be able to recommend a great setup. I persoanlly cant tell the differnce between round and 6*9 speakers because i dont have the ear for it. However $20 compaired to $150 speakers will definatly produce cleaner sound. Also if your headunit is a basic factory unit then it may not be able to operate the speakers to their full potential. Agains a car audio specialist could clear this up nicely for you.

            1. elliptics will give you better low range.
            2. NOTHING will give you a good sound with factory head unit or even good aftermarket HU, UNLESS you have twitters and decent sub in the trunk, that coming with an amp. SOMETHING has to make those drivers WORK.
            3. At least, get a decent 4 channel amp for the doors, but still – no sub in the trunk – no good sound. Unless you have factory BOSE system with good sub and amp already.
